Blatnice, the village I grew up in, is located on the outer fringe of the emergency evacuation zone
surrounding the Dukovany nuclear power generating station in southern Moravia. The series,
Living in the Zone, begins with recollections I have as a youth, when I learned that children from
Belarus had arrived nearby for convalescence following the catastrophic events at Chernobyl in
1986. The series examines the larger community relations between the region I come from and
the implications on the lives of individuals affected by the disaster of Chernobyl.
